ATS CV in Sri Lanka: Format, Keywords and Examples

An ATS-friendly CV should be easy for recruitment software to interpret and easy for a person to read. For Sri Lankan job applications, the practical approach is a clear structure, relevant wording and evidence you can explain.

There is no universal “ATS score” that guarantees an interview. Different employers use different systems and selection processes. The goal is to remove avoidable reading problems while showing your fit for the actual role.

Use a straightforward structure

Start with your name and contact details, followed by a short role-focused summary, skills, experience or projects, and education. Put the most relevant evidence earlier.

The National Careers Service CV guide provides general guidance on the information a CV can contain. It is a UK career resource, not a rulebook for Sri Lankan employers; the vacancy's own instructions take priority.

For a general application, avoid relying on decorative icons to communicate your phone number or section headings. A simple single-column layout gives you fewer reading-order problems to inspect.

Match keywords to truthful evidence

Read the advert and highlight the skills that genuinely apply to you. If it asks for SQL and you used SQL in a project, name the skill and describe the work.

The examples above illustrate specificity. Replace them with your own experience rather than copying them as achievements.

Do not paste every word from the advert into a hidden block, repeat keywords unnaturally or claim tools you have only heard about.

Check the exported file

Follow the requested format. If the employer accepts PDF, export a text-based document and check that you can select and copy its text in a sensible order. If a portal asks for another format, provide it.

Open the final file on a second device. Check page breaks, dates, links and whether a heading has become separated from its content. A beautiful source document can export badly.

Name the file clearly, for example “Nimali-Perera-QA-CV.pdf” for a fictional candidate. Keep one submitted copy for each role.

Write bullets around work you performed

A useful bullet explains the action, the object and the result or purpose. “Built a booking form with date validation and documented five failure cases” gives the reader several things to ask about.

Use numbers only when you have a basis for them. You can describe a useful improvement without inventing a percentage. Label academic projects, personal projects and paid work accurately.

If you used AI to edit a bullet, compare it with your original notes. Remove any responsibility or result the tool added.

Run a final relevance review

Ask whether the first half of the CV makes your target role obvious. Remove repeated skills that take space without adding evidence.

Check dates against your application form and profile. Ask a trusted reader to explain what they think you can do after reading the document. Their answer is a useful test of clarity.

Should every CV be one page?

Length depends on relevant experience and employer instructions. A concise first-job CV may fit one page; more relevant experience may justify additional space.

Should you include a photograph?

Follow the verified application requirements. For a general CV, assess whether a photograph contributes anything the employer needs, and avoid making it a substitute for evidence.

Can an online checker guarantee ATS compatibility?

No checker can establish how every employer's system and recruiter will evaluate your application. Use it as one diagnostic input, then inspect the actual document yourself.
