School Leaver CV in Sri Lanka: First Job Examples

A school leaver CV in Sri Lanka can be useful even when you have no paid work experience. Your task is to show what you have learned, where you have taken responsibility and how that connects to an entry-level role.

Start with genuine evidence from school activities, personal projects, volunteering or family responsibilities that are appropriate to discuss. A first CV does not need an invented employment history.

Choose the role before writing the summary

A retail assistant application and an IT internship application need different emphasis. Read a few relevant notices and list the recurring duties you can support.

A fictional school leaver seeking an administrative role might write: “School leaver with experience organising club records and preparing event spreadsheets, seeking an entry-level administrative position.” This states a direction and a basis for it.

Avoid summaries made entirely from adjectives such as hardworking, dynamic and passionate. Explain the activity behind the quality.

Organise the first page

Use clear contact information, a short summary, education, relevant activities and skills. Add projects when they help the reader evaluate your abilities.

The National Careers Service's CV advice is a useful general reference for section planning. Adapt it to the Sri Lankan employer's actual instructions.

Do not describe pending results as completed qualifications. If you are waiting for an examination outcome, say so clearly.

Turn activities into evidence

Consider a fictional student who helped organise a school exhibition. Their evidence could include creating a registration sheet, checking participant names and coordinating the order of presentations.

A strong description would identify their own part: “Maintained the participant list and confirmed presentation times with class representatives.” It should not imply they managed the entire event if they only handled one task.

For an IT application, a small working project can be valuable. Describe what it does, the tools used and one problem you solved. Include a link only if the project is ready for someone else to inspect.

Build one missing example

If your CV contains no relevant evidence, choose a manageable practice task. An aspiring office assistant could create a fictional stock sheet. An aspiring developer could build a form with validation. A customer-service applicant could practise explaining a simple process clearly.

Label practice work as a personal project. Give it a clear outcome and keep enough notes to explain how you completed it.

Do not buy a certificate solely to fill empty space. First identify the skill you need and how you will demonstrate it.

Prepare the document for applications

Use a clean layout and the file format requested by the employer. Open the exported document and check every contact detail.

Ask permission before naming someone as a referee. Include referee details only when requested or useful for the particular application, and avoid publishing private contact information in a public portfolio.

Keep your master CV in a private folder and make a tailored copy for each role.

Can family-business work appear on a CV?

Yes, if it is real and relevant. Explain the actual arrangement and duties without inflating the position into a formal management role.

What if you have a gap after school?

Describe useful study, work, caring responsibilities or projects honestly where relevant. You do not need to invent an activity for every month.

Clear evidence, accurate qualifications and a visible connection to the role. A recruiter should understand what you could contribute and what you still need to learn.
