Interview Questions in Sri Lanka: STAR Answer Examples

Interview preparation becomes more useful when you practise explaining real decisions. For a Sri Lankan graduate or professional, the strongest examples may come from employment, study, volunteering or a personal project. The setting matters less than your ability to explain your own contribution.

Use common questions to organise your evidence, but avoid memorising answers that sound unrelated to the role.

Understand the STAR structure

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result. The National Careers Service explanation describes it as a way to structure examples in applications and interviews.

Keep the situation short. Spend more time on what you personally did and why. End with the outcome and what you learned, including limitations when the outcome was imperfect.

A result does not always need a percentage. Completing a handover, finding a defect or identifying a failed approach can be a meaningful outcome.

Prepare an evidence bank

Choose several examples that cover different abilities.

Write a few bullet points for each story. Include the context, your role and the evidence you can discuss. Do not invent a leadership position to make an ordinary contribution sound larger.

A worked answer about a mistake

Imagine a fictional student maintaining a registration sheet for a community workshop. They copied a list twice and noticed duplicate names before the final attendance count.

Their answer could explain: “I was responsible for preparing the participant list. During a final check I found repeated entries. I compared the rows with the original sign-up records, removed only confirmed duplicates and asked another organiser to review the corrected list. We used the checked version at the event, and I added a duplicate check to the next registration sheet.”

The useful detail is the verification process. The candidate accepts responsibility and explains how they reduced the chance of repetition.

Handle questions that are not STAR questions

“Tell me about yourself” needs a concise professional introduction, not a long life story. Connect your current background, a relevant example and the direction you are pursuing.

“Why this employer?” needs research. Refer to a product, service or responsibility you have actually checked, then explain the connection to your interests.

For a technical question, clarify assumptions and explain your reasoning. If you do not know something, identify what you do know and how you would investigate. Pretending certainty makes follow-up questions harder.

Practise with a simple scorecard

Record one answer and review whether the example addresses the question, makes your contribution clear and reaches an understandable result. Ask a friend to identify any missing detail.

Practise the same example with different questions so you learn to adapt it. If a teamwork story does not answer a question about technical troubleshooting, choose another story.

End a mock interview with questions about responsibilities, support and how success is assessed. These help you decide whether the position fits.

How many examples should you prepare?

Prepare enough to cover the main duties and behaviours in the notice. A small set of detailed, flexible examples is easier to use than dozens of memorised scripts.

Can you discuss a failed project?

Yes. Explain the goal, the decision that failed, what you learned and what you would change. Do not claim a successful launch if it never happened.

What if you need a moment to think?

Ask for a brief moment or clarify the question. A considered answer is preferable to a fast answer that addresses the wrong issue.
