CV vs Resume in Sri Lanka: Which Should You Send?

The difference between a CV and a resume depends on the employer, country and type of application. In Sri Lanka, the safest approach is to read the requested document and its instructions rather than assume that the label alone determines the length.

An industry application usually needs a concise, relevant account of your experience. An academic application may need a fuller record of research, teaching and publications.

Start with the application's purpose

Ask what the reader needs to evaluate. A junior developer recruiter may want project evidence and technical skills. A research selection panel may need publications, methods, teaching and academic references.

For an industry CV, choose bullets that explain what you did and why it matters to the role. For an academic CV, use the format and level of detail requested by the institution.

Avoid adding personal information that the application does not need. Treat referee contact details as private information and ask permission before sharing them.

Adapt the final document

Read the notice again and check the requested format, filename, supporting documents and submission route.

If the employer uses “CV” and “resume” interchangeably without further instructions, send a clear, role-focused document. Ask for clarification when the distinction affects a material requirement.

Keep a copy of the submitted version. Interview preparation is easier when you know exactly what the reader received.
