For a fictional six-month plan, suppose transport costs LKR 500 per teaching day and you attend 20 days a month. Transport alone is LKR 60,000 over the course. If tools or registration add another LKR 10,000, your planning total is LKR 70,000 despite free tuition. Replace those assumptions with your actual timetable and journey.

Check entry requirements and the next intake

Read the current admission notice from the college. Confirm the closing date, required school subjects, age conditions if any, selection procedure and documents. Course pages can remain online between intakes, so an active webpage is not evidence of an open application window.

Ask whether classes are full-time or part-time and whether industrial training extends beyond classroom study. A course advertised as six months may still require additional assessment or placement steps before the qualification is issued. Obtain those details in writing.

Check what progression is available

If your goal is a higher NVQ level, diploma or degree, ask the receiving institution about its entry rules. Do not rely on a verbal promise that every certificate leads directly into the next programme. Recognition of prior learning, relevant work experience and additional subjects may affect your route.

For employment, compare the course's practical outcomes with current job descriptions. Ask what tools you will use, what work you will complete independently and how your skills will be assessed. A short course is most useful when you can explain and demonstrate the competence it developed.
