Accountant salaries in Sri Lanka should be compared by qualification stage and responsibility, not simply by the title on a vacancy. Bookkeeping support, financial reporting, audit work and leading a finance function are different assignments. Establish the work you will sign off, review or prepare before choosing comparable salary evidence.

Match qualification stage and actual duties

Ask whether the role mainly involves transaction processing, reconciliations, management reporting, statutory reporting or audit coordination. Clarify whether you prepare work for review or carry final responsibility. Compare vacancies that recognise a similar qualification stage and scope. A title such as accounts executive may hide substantial ownership, while an accountant title may still involve closely supervised work.

Investigate the reporting calendar

Ask about month-end and year-end workloads, reporting deadlines and the systems used to prepare accounts. Find out whether records are current or whether you are expected to clear a backlog. Clarify weekend work and time off during study or examinations. The timing and predictability of the workload can materially affect the value of an offer.

Calculate study support separately

Imagine a fictional LKR 110,000 monthly salary plus LKR 120,000 in approved annual exam support. The fixed annual cash salary is LKR 1,320,000. The study benefit has value only to the extent that you can use it and meet its conditions. Ask about eligible exams, study leave and repayment requirements before comparing it with a higher cash offer.

Demonstrate dependable financial work

Prepare an anonymised example of resolving a reconciliation difference, improving a close process or explaining a variance. Show the evidence checked and how your work was reviewed. Do not publish a client’s accounts or confidential financial records. A careful explanation of controls and judgment supports a salary discussion more effectively than claiming responsibility for results that required formal approval from others.

Negotiate the responsibility you will carry

Ask who reviews your work, who signs submissions and what support exists for unfamiliar requirements.
